About research

The Structures and Materials Research Laboratory (SMRL) is part of the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Viterbi School of Engineering. It is a core facility of the University of Southern California (USC) that is open to all USC and outside researchers.

Mission

SMRL’s mission is to help solve world’s most challenging engineering problems in infrastructure engineering and related material sciences, and educate and train the necessary workforce to support this mission at USC and beyond.

For prospective students

Undergraduate and graduate students can benefit from the lab in a number of ways.

  • SMRL offers research opportunities for undergraduate students interested in gaining hands-on experience in structural and material engineering.
  • Students can participate in ongoing research projects, work closely with faculty and graduate students, and develop their skills in experimental techniques.
  • SMRL also assists courses in structural and material engineering, which can provide a strong foundation for a career in the field.
  • SMRL is a great place for graduate students to conduct cutting-edge research in structural and material engineering.
