SMRL is a USC recharge center
The Structures and Materials Research Laboratory (SMRL) is part of the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Viterbi School of Engineering. It is a core facility of the University of Southern California (USC) that isĀ open to all USC and outside researchers.

Finding solutions to the problems in our community.
Our researchers conduct cutting-edge research to develop new materials and structures for use in civil, aerospace, energy, and biomedical applications. Their work is aimed at advancing knowledge and solving real-world problems. Our research is funded through federal, state and international organizations.
Working amongst a diverse and highly qualified group of researchers
We cherish our diverse group of students and staff who enjoy working in one of the most culturally rich and scholarly cities in the United States.

Using the state-of-the-art equipment for research
Our laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art testing, measurement and data acquisition systems to conduct research on the development of advanced materials and systems, with the goal of improving performance, reducing costs and increasing sustainability.
Constantly looking for ways to improve life with research data
Researchers in our lab use cutting-edge techniques and equipment to design and test new materials and systems, with the goal of improving performance, reducing costs, and increasing sustainability.
