Rehabilitation of Deteriorated Concrete Infrastructure in Qatar Using Shape Memory Alloys for Active Confinement

Sponsor: Qatar National Research Fund

The objective of this project was to develop a new repair technique for deteriorated critical structural elements, specifically, columns and shear beams, using active confinement with shape memory alloys (SMAs). Specifically, the project had (i) identified the parameters that most significantly affect the behavior of SMA active confinement for circular reinforced concrete columns and shear critical beams subjected to axial load, (ii) developed constitutive models to predict the response of reinforced concrete members actively confined with shape memory alloys, and (iii) evaluated the effect of uncertainty on the life-cycle costs of the proposed retrofit system.
